Psyllium pellets aids in the control of sand accumulation and colic in horses.

Psyllium is your first line of defense against the accumulation of sand in the digestive tract of horses. Our psyllium pellets with probiotics and Camelina oil have been formulated to help maintain general health, promote optimal digestive functions and a healthy microbial flora.

To aid in the control of sand accumulation: Administer orally 220 g/day (3 measures) for a 550 kg horse for 7 consecutive days with grain, once a month. Administer orally 220 g/day (3 measures) for a 550 kg horse with grain every other day to horses in a very sandy and high risk environment.

If a sand accumulation is confirmed by a veterinarian: Administer orally 375 g/day (4 to 5 measures) for a 550 kg horse with grain every day. Verify for traces of sand in the manure with a sand test after each week of treatment and continue until the sand is completely removed. This procedure can take a few weeks.

Research

Consumption of sand and dirt by horses can cause chronic diarrhea, weight loss and colic due to the irritation and the obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract.

In two reports, the incidence of sand colic varied from 5% to 30% of all cases of colic.

Daily supplementation with a probiotic, prebiotic and psyllium supplement demonstrated enhanced fecal sand clearance.
